It gives us great pleasure to pay humble homage to this little bee whose striking deep blue color has always intrigued us. The American native, Blue Orchard Bee, (Osmia lignaria) is a solitary bee, one of the largest groups of bees in the approximately twenty thousand different species of bees in the world. There is surprisingly little known about the species of solitary bees, in Latin America and Australia, many species have yet to be identified. They nest in exisiting structures often, such as a rock crevice, a tree, or in soil or sand, and they go into a type of stasis called diapause, during colder climates to survive. The striking Blue Orchard Bee is a fine pollinator and will eat whatever blooms are in season. They have recently been introduced as a pollinator in commercial almond orchards. Our handcrafted card accompanying this Necklace will include info about the Blue Orchard Bee.
The Sterling linked beaded chain will be composed of Sterling wrapped rectangles of Lapis Lazuli, Green Aventurine, faceted Kyanite rondells, round green Malachite, ovals of Tanzanite and some Labradorite for sparkle. Ending at 18" on the neck, with our double Leaf Sterling clasp, all dipped in a natural Patina for a charcoal grey finish in the recesses.
A mystical Blue Bee, crafted with love in our mother daughter Studio in the lower Hudson Valley of NY. Teresa, a native of NYC, has been designing and crafting details of the environment rendered in metal since 1988; her first insect was a fly. Her young daughter Brie now joins her in this family enterprise of making things to wear.
