Inspired by the beauty of the feathery light texture of their pearly white wings so fragile & thin, I was compelled to recreate one solidly in Sterling, in a full 3d effect. Long after summer is past, a gentle reminder of the depth, mystery and richness of the season's nights. Moths, the nocturnal cousin of the butterfly, outnumber their more showy cousins 14 to 1, in North America. National Moth Week is a wordwide summer celebration, of the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths. Learn more here: http://www.nationalmothweek.org/
Philosophically speaking, night creatures do not tumble in the dark, symbolically, we humans use our dreams, our awareness, and our deeper, inner knowing to navigate through the darkest hours of our lives. As a creature of the night, we know the moth is highly influenced by the power of the moon as well as artificial light. This aspect ties in with animal symbolism of intuition, and psychic awareness. Even at the risk of loosing its life, the moth is ever-vigilant in following its path of light. This may also serve as a moral to us to keep our own vigilance, but not fall victim of blind faith.
"I enjoy the challenge of creating my pieces in metal, from sketches in my journal of observations of the many interesting details that call to me from my environment, or from treasures that my daughter Brie brings into the studio for observation." -- Teresa de la Guardia, Artist, Designer, Maker
